Die Geträumten
Directed by Ruth Beckermann
Synopsis
It’s not uncommon for a film to have a moving love story at its core. Yet this particular set-up is unusual. The lovers here are Ingeborg Bachmann and Paul Celan, both important representatives of post-war German-language poetry. The story of the relationship between the Austrian and the Jew from Czernowitz is told through their nearly 20-year correspondence (1948–1967). Or, more precisely, by a young woman and a young man reading from their letters in a studio in Vienna’s venerable Funkhaus.

My capsule review from my TIFF Wavelengths coverage for MUBI:
The vast majority of the running time of The Dreamed Ones consists of two actors in a studio, engaging in a readers' theatre performance of the correspondence between Romanian poet Paul Celan and his longtime friend and lover, Austrian poet / novelist Ingeborg Bachmann. The performers, Anja Plaschg and Laurence Rupp, read the letters from their handheld manuscripts and speak them directly into studio microphones, one after the other. It is as if Beckermann is filming a documentary about the making of an audiobook.
But this doesn't give a precise sense of the experience of watching Dreamed Ones. With their low-key delivery, Plaschg and Rupp carefully bring out the…

Fourth viewing. Added half a star because each time I watch it I'm more impressed by the form and, as a result, am more wrecked by the trauma.

Two people reading letters in front of a microphone; it doesn't look like cinema but it is and how powerful.

E pensare che Leviathan e Don't Look Back erano pure fighissimi. -

Review by Pranav Joshi ★★★★★
Though employing the form of a reconstruction documentary (a form of resurrecting and re-enacting historical events), it is actually an epistolary narration of the love letters between two of the greatest post-war European poets/writers - Ingeborg Bachmann & Paul Celan.
Ingeborg's father had been closely associated with the Nazi party while Paul was a Jewish emigré who escaped to France to avoid persecution during WW2.
Paul and Ingeborg's correspondence is considered among the greatest epistolary exchanges between two lovers who also happened to be highly intellectual, self-aware and often self-effacing artists.
The passionate interplay of the metaphors they used for each other, their profound contemplations on the fleeting nature of long-distance relationships and their bleak views on the state of 1940s…

Interesting and experimental narrative constructed out of letters and actors reading them. Fascinating how things combine and provide context with the whole frame around the story existing in an uncertain space.
