Critics Consensus

It misses perhaps as often as it hits, but Jim Carrey's manic bombast, Cameron Diaz' blowsy appeal, and the film's overall cartoony bombast keep The Mask afloat.

The Mask | Rotten Tomatoes (1) Steven Rea Philadelphia Inquirer When his face turns green and his limbs get limber, Carrey's pretty much unstoppable. This cartoon-y creation is an amazing fusion of physical comedy and state-of-the- art cinema illusion. Rated: 2.5/4 Apr 12, 2013 Full Review The Mask | Rotten Tomatoes (2) Michael Sragow The New Yorker The gangland plot is flimsy (bad guy Peter Greene wears too much eyeliner), and the jokes are erratic, but it's a far better showcase for Carrey's comic-from-Uranus talent than Ace Ventura. Apr 12, 2013 Full Review The Mask | Rotten Tomatoes (3) Gene Siskel Chicago Tribune Carrey and his aggressive overbite are back, but this time he's better used as an ingredient instead of as the plot. Rated: 3/4 Apr 12, 2013 Full Review The Mask | Rotten Tomatoes (4) Joshua M. Patton CBR The humor in The Mask movie hasn't aged well. But to be fair the other performances aren't bad and their were some cool scenes, overall good movie. Rated 3/5 Stars • Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/28/25 Full Review Jeremiah N Still my favorite movie ever Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/25/25 Full Review Shura B When I watched it as a kid, I just found it bizarre, maybe even a bit traumatizing. Rewatching it now, I didn’t expect it to be such a groundbreaking film. Jim Carrey? I can only say he’s the best comedy actor of all time! The part where he dances with the cops in a musical-style scene was so absurdly hilarious. Oh, and yes! The music in this film is fantastic, and the art direction is way ahead of its time. 8.5/10.
